NONA Drinks: From Personal Experiment to Belgian 0% Pioneer
The story of NONA Drinks begins with Charlotte Matthys. As a bio-engineer with a passion for nature, nutrition and product innovation, she identified a clear gap in 2018: people who chose not to drink alcohol were often offered little more than a sweet mocktail, soft drink or tonic when dining out.
Charlotte decided to do things differently. She began experimenting with herbs, botanicals and distillation techniques and developed NONA June, her first alcohol-free spirit. What started as a personal experiment grew into a fully-fledged Belgian brand specialising in premium alcohol-free spirits and cocktails.
The first reactions were promising. After its launch in the hospitality sector, NONA grew rapidly. Michelin-starred restaurants such as Boury and The Jane added the product to their offerings, while the brand gradually found its way into supermarkets and consumers' homes both in Belgium and abroad. The range expanded with products including NONA Spritz, NONA Ginger, NONA Spritz & Tonic and NONA Mojito.
From Start-up to the Next Chapter
In 2026, an important new chapter began. Haelterman Group, the Belgian beverage distributor behind brands including Carlsberg, Granini, Schweppes and Taittinger, acquired NONA Drinks in full. The deal was concluded at the end of 2025 and only announced publicly in July 2026. The acquisition price was not disclosed.
For Charlotte, however, the acquisition does not mean saying goodbye to NONA. She remains involved as a product developer. NONA will also continue to operate as a separate entity, retaining its own brand identity and operational structure.
This makes the next chapter perhaps just as interesting as the success of the first. Charlotte can continue focusing on what was at the heart of NONA from the beginning: developing new products, experimenting with flavours and pushing the boundaries of alcohol-free drinks.
From a frustration at a restaurant table to a company with international ambitions, NONA shows how a personal observation can grow into an entirely new category within the beverage industry.
And perhaps that is ultimately the essence of NONA: not creating an alternative for people who don't drink alcohol, but creating products you actively choose — simply because they taste good.
